Course Description:
The EKG Technician is the person responsible for performing diagnostic tests to access the heart rhythm and rate in patients. EKG technician is an integral part of the management of patients with heart disease. The EKG Technician may also clean equipment, maintain and process data reports. The course will prepare students with the theory, academics and clinical education necessary to function as an entry level EKG technician. This course may be taken as a module toward completion of the PCT program, or it may be taken independently as an individual skills course. The course structure will consist of introduction to EKG, applied EKG and clinical EKG.


Pre-Requisite: High School Diploma, GED or Valley Medical Entrance Exam

COURSES

EKG01 ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY
Location of the heart, distinguish between the apex and base of the heart. Identify and describe the chambers of the heart and the vessels that enter or leave each.
EKG02 BASIC ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY
Describe the 2 basic types of cardiac cells in the heart, characteristics of cardiac cells, events comprising cardiac action potential and correlate them with the waveforms produced on the ECG. Describe the normal sequence of electrical conduction through the heart. Learn lead positioning and limitations.
EKG03 SINUS MECHANISMS
Describe ECG characteristics of a sinus rhythm, causes, signs, symptoms and emergency management of bradycardia, sinus arrhythmia ,tachycardia, sinoatrial block, sinus arrest.
EKG04 ATRIAL RHYTHM
Concepts of altered automaticity ,triggered activity, reentry. Premature atrial complexes, atrial tachycardia. Procedure for synchronized cardioversion. Atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation.
EKG05 JUNCTIONAL RHYTHMS
Describe EKG characteristics, causes, signs, symptoms and care for premature junctional complexes.
EKG06 VENTRICULAR RHYTHMS
Describe the EKG characteristics, causes, signs, symptoms of PVCs. bigeminy, trigeminy, quadrigeminy. Differences between PVC and escape beats.
EKG07 ATRIOVENTRICULAR BLOCKS
Characteristics, causes, symptoms and management of AV blocks.
EKG08 PACEMAKER RHYTHMS
Describe how to analyze pacemaker function on an EKG
EKG09 INTRODUCTION TO 12-LEAD EKG
Describe a systematic method for analyzing EKG.
